Deworming your pigs is an important step in maintaining pig health and food safety. All pigs raised outdoors should be dewormed at planned intervals to ensure the best possible outcome for people and pigs. Following the following guidelines provides a great starting point. If you have any additional questions, always reach out to your local veterinarian.
- Weaned pigs ~6-8 weeks (because piglets have maternal exposure)
- Early growing ~4 months old (because parasites affect growth)
- Gilts 2-4 weeks pre breeding (for healthy pregnancy)
- Pregnant Sows 2-4 weeks pre farrowing (reduce parasite load on piglets)
- Boars 2-3 times a year ideally pre-breeding (keep them healthy for high libido!)
- Ivermectin (injectable): Good for internal worms lice/mange
- Fenbendazole (on food): Good oral option for internal worms (does not get lice/mange)
